Personal Productivity

How to minimise distractions so you can get important things done.

Are you someone who is easily distracted by Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Netflix, chatty housemates, pets, etc?

There’s a few simple ways that you can achieve more of what you want to do in less time.

The best way to avoid distractions is to create your own environment where you can focus on the things you want to do.

All around us are everyday distractions and there seems to be no end. Distractions are the things that take your focus away from the things you want to do.

People around us constantly want our attention, television series are designed to get you hooked, social media wants you to engage more so they can sell more advertising space – don’t get sucked in!

Did you know that every time someone speaks to you, or you see a notification, or you get up to go the the bathroom or to get food – it takes you at least 15 minutes for your mind to refocus?

Getting stuff done is one of the best ways to feel good about yourself and make a sense of achievement! When we achieve more, we want to do more and we feel more confident.

Try out a few of these techniques to see what works best for you:

  1. Turn on airplane mode or better turn off your phone (tell your friends you’re having a short break)
  2. Move all of your distracting apps to their own folder and turn off app notifications
  3. Create a quiet, distraction-free environment in your bedroom or even get out of the house
  4. Get off the internet, turn off the WIFI router if you can
  5. Find yourself some music that you don’t know – play a radio station or playlist that you haven’t heard before – listening to music you already love can be distracting
  6. Stay focussed on one single task at a time and avoid multitasking
  7. Keep hydrated and replenished so your tummy doesn’t convince you that you need to go to the kitchen every few minutes
  8. Take a quick break away from your work environment every hour or so, to refresh your mind – this will help you focus better for longer
